The Work of Listening Closely
A life is vast. No single piece of writing can hold all of it, but a well-chosen story can carry more than we think: a turning point, a season, a voice, a way of being in the world.
I have spent much of my life listening for those stories. In the 1990s, I had the privilege of interviewing and writing about people who had lived nearly a century. That work taught me something I have never forgotten: what matters most is not only what happened, but how a person remembers it, what they return to, and what still shines after all these years.
Later, after my father died, I found myself wanting something fuller and more human than a standard obituary could offer. I created a website to hold his life with more room, more care, and more dignity than a few printed lines could ever contain. Looking back, I can see that instinct clearly now: all lives deserve more space than a template allows.
That is the heart of this work for me.
Through quiet, thoughtful story sessions, I work with people and families who want to preserve meaningful parts of a life story in writing. Sometimes it begins with one vivid memory. Sometimes one story leads gently to another. My role is to listen closely, shape what matters, and create a written piece that feels true to the life behind it.
If you entrust me with your story, or the story of someone you love, I will approach it with patience, respect, and care. This work is never rushed. It is built on listening, attention, and the belief that a life deserves to be treated with dignity on the page.
